Middle School Curriculum
Our global approach sees subjects and concepts extend through middle school and beyond
Students in middle school either continue their bilingual journey from elementary school or are introduced to the pre-International Baccalaureate program.
Our teaching staff work cooperatively to develop interdisciplinary projects for students to explore. LILA students may find themselves considering the relationships between the math and science of geothermal energy, for example, or learning about architecture in technology class and putting their French skills to use by interviewing an architect.
The program is wide ranging and stimulating. Courses are designed to be taught through a global approach and subjects and concepts extend over several years.
Our English Language Arts program fosters analytical and critical thinking skills through a dynamic and engaging curriculum.
Students explore a diverse selection of literature, including novels, poetry, short stories, and non-fiction, broadening their perspectives and deepening their understanding of the written word. Through collaborative work, guided discussions, and Socratic seminars, they refine their ability to articulate ideas and engage in thoughtful dialogue.
Writing is a central focus, with teachers dedicating time to developing students’ skills through consistent practice and reflection. Independent reading is also a key component, encouraging students to cultivate a lifelong love of literature. At all times, they are expected to have a book in hand, ready to immerse themselves in new ideas and stories.
Math is split into two courses: French Math and U.S. Math. Students spend three hours per week immersed in the French curriculum, which emphasizes reasoning, investigation, multiple problem-solving approaches, and real-world application of skills.
Additionally, they take two hours of U.S. Math, taught in English and aligned with Common Core State Standards. This course focuses on deepening conceptual understanding, helping students grasp the “why” behind mathematical concepts.
Students explore physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, and technology through hands-on, inquiry-based learning.
By applying the scientific method, they develop a deep understanding of key concepts while designing and conducting experiments to test their hypotheses. Our dynamic science and technology classes foster curiosity, critical thinking, and practical problem-solving skills.
Students are able to take history, geography, and civics in both French and English.
They explore world history from ancient civilizations to the 20th century and examine human and physical geography, gaining insight into society’s structures and global interconnections.
While strong writing skills are essential, the program also emphasizes oral expression, culminating in oral exams for Diplôme National du Brevet, option Internationale (DNBi) students.
Our French classes follow the curriculum set by the French Ministry of Education, fostering independent language learning and critical thinking in French. Students refine their writing and speaking skills while deepening their understanding of French culture through a diverse selection of novels, poetry, prose, and nonfiction.
Students begin learning their third language, Spanish, in 6th grade. Through speaking, writing, listening, and reading, they build strong language skills while gaining a deeper appreciation for Spanish and Latino cultures.
LILA’s visual arts program nurtures creativity through foundational and advanced techniques, offering students opportunities for exhibitions, collaborative projects, and skill development across various mediums. With access to professional resources like an etching press and a darkroom, students explore drawing, painting, digital arts, and mixed media.
Designed to complement LILA’s bilingual focus, the music program integrates theory with language and follows the Suzuki pedagogy of “Every Child Can.” Students study diverse genres, from classical to jazz and folk music, while learning instruments like keyboard, ukulele, guitar, and percussion. The World Music program introduces African drumming, Brazilian samba, Spanish flamenco, and Middle Eastern music. Choir and audition-based band programs offer additional performance opportunities, with concerts held twice a year.
Our Physical Education program helps students develop their physical abilities while fostering teamwork, discipline, and a lifelong appreciation for an active lifestyle. They enhance their strength, coordination, and endurance while gaining a deeper understanding of how their bodies function.
Beyond physical skills, PE at LILA emphasizes sportsmanship, leadership, and collaboration. Students learn the value of perseverance, goal-setting, and strategic thinking, all while engaging in dynamic team-based and individual activities.
