Elementary School Curriculum
The French education system is globally celebrated for its excellence, and we proudly adhere to the official program set by the French Ministry of Education.
The French cycle system empowers each student to progress at their own unique pace, acquiring essential skills across three-year spans.
Starting in preschool, students are fully immersed in the French language, fostering a deep linguistic foundation from an early age. English instruction begins at 20% while oral language skills are being built in French, gradually increasing to approximately 40% by 5th grade when students begin to consolidate learning and transfer knowledge between languages.
A strong foundation in reading at an early age sets the stage for academic success across all subjects. Our comprehensive English program starts in kindergarten, focusing on developing essential reading skills. As students progress, they build on this foundation with composition skills, phonics, grammar, and spelling.
In our balanced stepped-immersion model, students can read in English by the end of kindergarten (cycle 1); by the end of 3rd grade (cycle 2), they are proficient readers in both English and French. By 6th grade (cycle 3), they are confident in reading and writing in both languages, equipped with the skills to excel in a globalized world.
We cultivate an appreciation for poetry, novels, and other literary works, enriching students’ understanding and love for literature.
Our mathematics curriculum uniquely combines the strengths of both French and American philosophies, bridged through a common methodology of the Singapore Math curriculum. The French approach emphasizes deep conceptual understanding, while the American system focuses on practical application and problem-solving skills. Our approach benefits from the strongest elements of both.
Our dynamic science curriculum is based in French competencies and inspired by the cutting-edge Next Generation Science Standards. Students explore methodologies by actively engaging in experiments and scientific inquiry, developing their critical thinking skills and giving them a strong foundation in scientific principles. Science is taught entirely in French, allowing for students’ essential French vocabulary to grow.
In French, our history and geography curriculum engages students in both French history as well as the world’s strongest geography program. Students explore time and space by blending science and social studies in an innovative way that encourages a proactive and inquisitive approach to life, where one constantly seeks to learn, understand, and challenge the status quo.
In English, our students learn bedrock American history and government in the social studies program, confronting the colonial past of both countries.
Our art program fosters curiosity, autonomy, and critical thinking through diverse artistic exploration. Students engage with various mediums—drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, digital creation, and more—while learning about global artists and styles. Through hands-on, project-based learning, they develop creativity, collaboration, and cultural appreciation in a supportive environment.
LILA’s theater program builds expressive and collaborative skills through group work, improvisation, and play production. Starting in 2nd grade, students develop stage presence and teamwork, advancing through progressive training that culminates in a 5th-grade performance. Theater nurtures confidence, empathy, and creative problem-solving.
From 1st to 5th grade, students explore music through singing, listening, and performing. They progress from basic vocal experimentation to expressive performance, expanding their repertoire and musical understanding while building confidence and creativity.
Our Physical Education program, primarily taught in French, focuses on developing essential skills with a strong emphasis on safety, teamwork, sportsmanship, and technique.
Students develop five key skills: improving motor skills and expressing themselves physically; learning methods and tools related to physical activity; sharing rules and taking on roles/responsibilities; maintaining health through regular exercise; and developing an appreciation for physical, sporting, and artistic culture.
This comprehensive approach ensures that students not only build physical fitness but also learn the importance of collaboration, discipline, and respect, fostering a lifelong appreciation for active and healthy living.
